Strategic ore
Columbite
Niobium-bearing concentrate for micro-alloyed structural steels and superconductors.
Overview
Columbite occurs alongside tantalite across the Jos Plateau and the Nasarawa pegmatite field, and the two are separated during upgrading rather than sold as an undifferentiated coltan mix. Buyers get a concentrate priced on the metal they actually need.
Niobium demand is driven by high-strength low-alloy steel, where a fraction of a percent changes the strength of a structural section entirely, which makes consistency of grade more valuable to a buyer than headline peak grade.
Applications
- Micro-alloyed HSLA structural steel
- Pipeline and automotive steel
- Superconducting magnets for MRI and research
- Jet engine and rocket components
